The Story Behind “Gesha”
The Gesha varietal traces its origins to the Gesha region of Ethiopia. For decades, it remained relatively unknown outside research farms — until it was planted in Panama and revealed extraordinary cup qualities.
In 2004, Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama entered a Gesha lot into the Best of Panama competition — and the coffee stunned judges with its jasmine aromatics, bergamot brightness, and tea-like elegance. Auction prices followed. The varietal’s reputation grew.
Today, Gesha is cultivated carefully at high elevations around the world. When grown well and processed intentionally, it produces one of the most expressive cups in specialty coffee.
It represents patience. Craft. Rarity.
